A very sad day in internet history today as the famous Geocities has been turned off by Yahoo. I know alot of people will probably be angry at yahoo but i don’t really think the business is viable. One of the main reasons geocities was so successful in the beginning was that hosting was so expensive and difficult to setup back then. However these days that really isn’t the case as we see with all the free blog hosts etc.
I cant remember if i actually had a geocities page or not, can you guys? It was along time ago but i was floating around the web in 1997 trying desperately to get this html thing to work. I remember my first site was hosted on xzoom (a rival i think). I had all the usual “my first homepage” things like background music and animated gifs. Anyway i heard someone made a site to save some of the best geocities sites, Wired i think? Ill post it if i find it.
So as you know im always on the lookout for great designs to help me with my own ideas. Heres one i just spotted as “best of” on coolhomepages at www.creyons.com . Check them out!
Im aware that alot of you guys are still working on the basics of HTML. So heres another vid i found on “the tube” covering the basics of everyones favourite web-editor notepad!
So i thought i might write something about the announcement made just over a week ago that google would start to use speed as a factor when determining the position of results in the search engine. This has genuine implications for anyone who is thinking about purchasing a web hosting plan anytime soon as uptime and speed of your website could be a serious factor in weather google decides to rank your website or not. What do you guys think? Will this be a serious part of the google ranking formula or is this another PR stunt.
